LVMQG Mini Quilt Swap - Improv Chevron

Our guild swapped fat quarters at a meeting to use as inspiration for a mini-quilt.  The fabric I got was from Jenean Morrison's Silent Cinema line called Gray Featurette.  It's the gray print/border in the below mini-quilt.

Included with the fabric was a note that she liked 'Jewel Tones'.  I really had no idea what to do with it until some teal and gold fabric fell on my sewing room floor next to each other on accident.  I pulled a bunch of fabrics and went for the improv chevron block (Tutorial over on Six White Horses blog).   I actually meant to have more of the gray fabric showing, but after I finished piecing a couple of the strips, this is where my trimming landed it.

I put the remaining fabric on the back with a cute little strip of Kona berry on the binding.  The photo looks maroon but I can assure you that's just my bad photography and it's really a berry color.

I hand bound the edges and added a little white piece of ribbon for hanging:

Vintage Modern Quilt

My work in progress is complete!

With much inspiration from Film in the Fridge's FMF version of the Swirling Medallion quilt, I made my own Vintage Modern wall hanging.  The swirling medallion quilt pattern can be found in the Quilting Modern book.

As I mentioned before, this quilt was made for the Las Vegas Modern Quilt Guild's Bonnie and Camille Quilt Challenge. The rules were simply that we can use any B&C fabric and make any quilt we want.

This quilt finished at 34"w x 46"h.  It will make a perfect wall hanging as I slowly replace all the boring brown and beige colors in our home.

The white binding was a suggestion from my husband.  He usually runs out of the room if I ever ask him anything design related... so I'm not sure what prompted his input this time.  It brightens up the quilt - he made a good choice!  I also successfully hand stitched the binding on.  I'm getting much better at it and I love having something to do while watching TV.

I added two stripes to the back along with my standard embroidered name/date stamp.  I love how the quilting is highlighted on the back.

The awesome news is that my quilt won in the 'Best Use of Fabric' category!!  I received a Jelly Roll of Bonnie and Camille's Marmalade! :D

Work in Progress

The Las Vegas Modern Quilt Guild is hosting a Bonnie and Camille Quilt Challenge.  We can use any B&C fabric and make any quilt we want.

I purchased a charm pack of Vintage Modern and was on my way!  Here was my happy little spot this past weekend:

Our projects are due at our November meeting, so I will share photos of my finished project after that. :)

Pantone Orange Strip Swap - Fabric Cut

I've got 4 yards cut for our 2.5" Orange Strip Swap at the upcoming LVMQG meeting.  I plan on adding 2 more yards to this to get an even six.  I'll have approx 2 jelly rolls to work with!

LVMQG Sew-In Progress

Here's the progress I made at the sew-in that the Las Vegas Modern Quilt Guild hosted on Saturday, April 21st.

My new name tag is finally done!  A little bit of Washi to carry around!

I wanted these cute little tapes on the front, but they were way too big, so on the back it went.

Big improvement from my free-motioned-zig-zag old one:

(it has character!)

I also managed to finish Swoon Block #4.  Almost.  I had to assemble a little bit of it at home because we ran out of time there.  I haven't worked on my swoon quilt since the LVMQG retreat... but it will be completed someday!  (View other completed swoon blocks)  I've been busy with other stuff: I managed to add a ruffle to a skirt to lengthen it and hemmed my husband's suit pants all while playing with my embroidery machine.  :)

LVMQG Quilt Retreat Weekend

This is a cross post from my blog entry over
at the Las Vegas Modern Quilt Guild website:

The Las Vegas Modern Quilt Guild hosted a sewing retreat at this amazing house in southern Utah:

Check out the view from the roof deck:

11 members came for the weekend.  We all met up in Hurricane, UT, and visited a few local shops (Superior Threads, Quilted Works, Ace Hardware (seriously!), Scrap Apple, etc) before heading to the house.  Sharon was nice enough to feed us all on the first night there and brought a big pot Turkey Soup which was delicious!  There was no recipe because she just made it up (oh how I wish I could do that!).

The house had this insanely large basement so all of us were able to spread out and have a table, ironing areas, cutting areas, Accuquilt Go areas, etc!  HUGE SPACE.

We occupied it pretty quick.  This was the aftermath after the first sewing night:

Darlene gave a small gift to everyone!  She made embroidered luggage tags personalized with all of our names to remember this weekend!

Sharon created 2.5" tiny pieced squares and passed them out for all of us to create something with it.  Here's what everyone made:

Not included in that photo is Zany Quilter's zippered pouch, Sharon's jounal cover,  and my block which is still in progress.

We had some people cutting up scraps to make their own Sparkle Punch Quilt, some working on  Swoon blocks, some Octogonal Orb blocks, and many other quilty projects!

Here's everyone in action:

You thought that was the end of pictures?

Jan posted about the retreat over on her blog.  She has more photos too!

Sharon worked on this quilt at the retreat and posted about the retreat over here on her blog.

Have a great weekend!

Las Vegas Modern Quilt Guild Pillow Swap

Just an FYI... All of the pillows have been posted over on the Las Vegas Modern Quilt Guild website:

Pillow Swap Reveal

The LVMQG hosted a Not-So-Secret Secret Santa Pillow Swap (as I like to call it) where we each picked out a fat quarter for our inspiration. My swap partner chose Joel Dewberry's Heirloom Tile Flourish in Amber.

In my previous post I showed you the fabrics I pulled to match.  I stared at that stack of fabric forever and had no idea what to do with it. Personally, I love the Heirloom collection and wanted the actual design on the fabric to be the focus.  I didn't want to chop up the 'Tile Flourish' too small or you'll lose those large super-awesome designs.  I added the solids because I add solids to everything.  The two orange Kona colors I pieced amazingly matched both of the oranges in the fat quarter very closely!

I did a 1" straight line vertical quilting to keep with the stripe pattern and I attempted to add some waves to the solids.  For the back I had a piece of Amy Butler Twill in Mint which just happened to match.

Sorry, this is a boring pic, but I always want to see backs of pillows no matter what:

I added an invisible zipper to the bottom of the pillow.  I just bought the invisible zipper foot and this was its inaugural run.  It was super simple.  (Always visit Sew Kate Did for the best invisible zipper tutorial!)

Now for the pillow I received!

The fat quarter fabric I chose for my pillow inspiration was Kumari Garden Tarika in Gem:

My swap partner Mary used Texture Magic and sewed around each flower.  So it puffed up like this:

Which turned into this!

It's really cute!  I love how the puffiness worked so well with the fabric design.

She added a zipper to the back:

and some design stitches around it to finish it off:

(Thank you Mary for my pillow!)

Pillow Swap Fabric Selection

This is how much progress I've made on the pillow: I've yanked out stuff to match FQ fabric (Joel Dewberry's Heirloom Tile Flourish in Amber).

Any progress is good! :)  I've been focusing my attention on a lot of other sewing things.... lots of fabric retail therapy, I picked up a copy of Modern Blocks for some inspiration, I finished a quilt (finally), and I stayed up super late the day I got my fabric and made a bunch of pillows until like 3am!  I'll take pictures soon :)

LVMGQ Block Swap - Love Quilt

Today is Nevada Day! (We have our own state holiday!) With my free time, I finished three Love Blocks for Zany Quilter.   This was my first block swap ever passed to me.  I unfortunately didn't participate and make my own blocks because A. I missed a few meetings this summer due to vacations, B. I couldn't decide on a block, and C. I was scared.  But I will figure out something and participate in the next one coming up in January.

(I didn't realize until I was halfway through the O's that I screwed up the sew order of two of them. I hope you don't mind?!  It's still an O!)

Here's the package that I got.  Super organized!

Here's my final mess I made:
I love these piles

Check one project off of my list!

I need a new camera.  My iphone takes better quality pictures than my regular camera does now.

Pillow Swap Fabric

Woo Hoo! This is my fat quarter for the Las Vegas Modern Quilt Guild's not-so-secret Secret Santa Pillow Swap.  It's Joel Dewberry's Heirloom Tile Flourish in Amber.  Since I pretty much love everything Joel Dewberry, I so totally got this.

I have a lot of projects I'm in the middle of.. some of which I cannot share yet.  And last night I just added two more (one being this pillow).  I'm off to go get started!
